Kindness rarely arrives with fanfare. More often it slips into a moment and changes everything without making a scene.
Hacksaw ridge
How does the creator use settings to help you understand an important idea in our world?
In the text The Hero Of Hacksaw Ridge written by Booton Herndon which is set during World War 2 one specific setting which helped me to understand the key idea were Desmond Doss was being court-Martialed. I think the author used this setting to help the audience understand the idea that you should stand up to your beliefs because I think the author wants us to realise that in life all people should have the same rights and be allowed to do what they want even if their beliefs are different for example joining the army.
A key setting which helped me to understand the message of Desmond being Court-Martialed was at the training camp court and his dad came in to support Desmond Doss with his decision of not using a weapon. This setting was described in the text as a challenging, tiring, difficult situation for Desmond Doss.
Desmond’s experience of this setting was difficult and frustrating this was evident when he was constantly bullied and abused by his comrades. The way in which he reacted to the setting helps the audience to realise that Desmond is not going to give up on what he believes he should do and is loyal to his religion and beliefs and also not bow down to social pressure.
Desmond found this setting challenging because he was abused and went into Court-Martialing and missed his wedding because he was locked up and his fiance Dorothy was worried and his dad that didn’t even want Desmond to sign up for the army for the first place because of past experiences from the fist World War. I think his struggles in this setting helped the audience to understand that you cant get off easy in the army by doing less than the others and and how mean people are and Desmond wont give up to social pressure.
I believe that the author wants us, the audience to know that if your beliefs are different from others it shouldn’t stop you from doing what you want to do and humans can be really awful to others and resilient to overcome it. in our world today this idea is important/relevant because it can change the thoughts of younger generations to not discriminate against others and try to make a change to our future. As a teenager I think this would be good and helpful for younger generations to make a change.
Fire Emergency
I am a year 11 in fire and emergency services and I am writing about why smoke and panic are bigger killers than fire.
Some and panic are often bigger killers than fire itself because fear and confusion can cause people to make dangerous decisions in an emergency.
In many cases, stampedes, rushing for exits, or blocking escape routes have led to more deaths than the flames. Smoke inhalation and poor visibility add to the panic, making it harder for people to think clearly or follow safe evacuation procedures While fire is deadly, it is often disorganised reactions that turn a situation into a tragedy.
Hero Of Hacksaw Ridge
Desmond Doss was a United States Army corporal and combat medic who served during World War II. He was born in Lynchburg, Virginia, in 1919, and raised as a devout Seventh-day Adventist with a strong commitment to nonviolence and Sabbath-keeping. During the war, Doss refused to carry a weapon due to his religious beliefs, facing skepticism and harassment from his fellow soldiers. He served in the Pacific theater, notably on Guam, Leyte, and at the Battle of Okinawa, where he saved at least 75 wounded soldiers by lowering them down a cliff to safety despite heavy enemy fire. Doss earned the Medal of Honor—the first conscientious objector to receive this distinction—for his extraordinary bravery and humanitarian actions. He achieved this by relying on his faith and ingenuity, using only the Bible and medical supplies to rescue his comrades under the most perilous conditions.
Desmond Doss faced several significant challenges, both during his military service and in his post-war life. These included overcoming initial prejudice and hostility from his fellow soldiers due to his conscientious objection to carrying a weapon, enduring intense physical and mental stress in combat as a medic, and dealing with the lasting effects of combat injuries and illness after the war.
Community service
Community service is when you do work to help other people or improve your community without getting paid because it’s a job to help the community without getting paid. This work can be done alone or in a group. Community service is often done in the place where you live, so your own community benefits from your help.
People of all ages can do community service, and sometimes it is required by schools or courts but our class and some other classes helped clean the Kawakawa tennis courts by the hospital and close from the roundabout and on the right when you start to leave the town because it is what our option is to do stuff other classes don’t.
We did this to make the area look cleaner and so people who like and used to play tennis can play again because the government stopped paying funds for the court so people stopped going and grass just started going everywhere and it had not been cleaned for lots of years. Our class went up and shoveled the grass up and some students had brooms to sweep up the grass and others put them in wheel barrows to put in the trailer and they dropped it off somewhere and in my fire emergency class we went up and finished it up and others power washed the little parts down so it would look more tidy and cleaner so you don’t get muddy and stuff.
You learn that helping people feels good and you learn how to work together with people and it makes other local people in the community happy that they can do stuff when they get bored and they can make a team in tennis and it gets more people active and want to play and people can play other stuff on the tennis courts too.
Level 1 english
In level 1 English we are learning about how to write an essay about the story of the hero of hacksaw ridge by Booton Herndon. Yesterday we were writing about his decision about not carrying weapons so we had to write about the start of it and the middle and the end of it. Desmond Doss was the protagonist of the story and he was very important to his soldiers and his country in the army and he was very religious and want to carry any weapons or kill anyone and he believed in the ten commandments but mostly the sixth one because of they’re saying thou shall not kill under any circumstances and he was a seventh day Adventist church member. when he first joined the barracks he was bullied because he was the only religious man there. when he started praying in the night his teammates started throwing shoes at him and calling him a preacher man. then they started marching the next day and all he was carrying was med kits so the men started getting angry and said Desmond had it made in the shade but they didn’t know the med kits weighed more than the rifle. But then the men started getting blisters on their feet so Desmond tended to them and earned the respect of his soldiers. we also have been going on hapara workspace and answering questions about each chapter and writing about the story and we sometimes had rotary people come in and do some activities with us to help with our assessment we are going to be doing. We also did an end of the term Kahoot about the story of hero of the hacksaw ridge and we won prizes. Whoever got a certain place got the prize so first place wouldn’t get every prize.
The Concept of a hero
The hero I have chosen is Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi
He was born on 2 October 1869 and he lived most of his life in South Africa
Gandhi is viewed as a modern-day hero due to his successful application of non violent resistance
He served as a lawyer, politician, and activist in the struggle for social justice and for India’s independence from British rule. Gandhi is internationally esteemed for his doctrine of nonviolent protests to achieve political and social progress.
His non-violent resistance helped end British rule in India and has influenced modern civil disobedience movements across the globe.

Social Studies
In social studies we have been learning about lake Omapere.
After the treaty of Waitangi Maori had 66 million acres and now they have less than 4 million acres. Geologists believed lava was formed blocking the Waitangi river. Lake Omapere is the largest lake in northland. The English word for Omarpere is a Place of cutty grass. The water also used to be safe to drink but not anymore. In the video was a huge eel that was at least 8 foot 200 pounds.
When the Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840 the Maori people had traditional ownership of 66 million acres of land. 10 years later the British Crown owned 37 million of those acres. Today less than 4 million acres remain in Maori land. O = kai ma = for pere= belly of the taniwha. The side of the taniwha that has the scales on it is not sacred. The other side – the half that has no scales on it this is the sacred side of the taniwha. This is the reason it is named lake Omapere. Back in the 1900s there used to be Maori villages all on the western shore.
When they went to spear eels they were scared of some places to go because if you stepped on on one end of the swampy area the other would rise up but then the eels would disappear the spears were very long but the eels would swim deeper in the lake they were scared because they knew there was a taniwha lurking beneath the muddy waters and you could easily slip in the deep water and drown.

Paihia movie theatre
Kia Ora,
In you Social Studies class we were looking at a community project to propose. We have been working on a community project proposal that we want in our community, and the one we decided on together was a movie theatre.
The reason why we chose this is because we think it would be fun to have a movie theatre in Paihia but the first place we thought of was Russel because I live all the way past Elliot’s bay but then we decided to choose Paihia instead of Russel because we thought it would be a better place to put a movie theatre since its bigger. We think this would be a good a idea because you wont have to travel all the to Kerikeri and we think a lot of people would go because Paihia has a pretty big community so the tickets would sell good.
The evidence on our survey said that the people do not want a movie theatre in town.
Thank you for taking the time to read my blog post please read more below of our idea and we hope for some feedback that we can read.
